What will be your role?

Radar systems offer an important contribution to understanding what is happening around you. A radar provides a reliable picture of the environment, day and night and in all weather conditions.

What will be your role?
Together with colleagues, you'll devise new radar system concepts that lead to information superiority for the end user, taking into account trends in technological development and the constant evolution of threats. Future systems will have to operate in complex situations in which multiple radar systems are connected in a scalable manner, where these systems operate in a crowded EM spectrum, are robust against jamming, and where there must be sufficient degree of redundancy, maintainability, and graceful degradation.

• You'll further develop promising concepts together with industrial partners. This may result in development of new prototypes or testing new concepts using existing radar systems.
• You'll collaborate with experts in other fields within TNO such as military operations and C2, weapon systems, and electronic warfare to build and maintain defence-relevant knowledge. With this knowledge, TNO supports the MoD in choosing radar systems as part of next generations of defence systems on land, at sea, in the air, and in space.
• You'll model and analyse radar systems based on public and non-public information; your own expertise and ability to estimate the capacity of systems is of great importance in this process.
• You'll also advise other parties outside the defence domain in, for example, formulating requirements for the procurement of new radar systems, or solving problems. For our clients, you'll also map the effects on radar images that can be expected as a result of, for example, the placement of wind turbines, or objects near a waterway.

What we expect from you

You're an analytical, organised team player who communicates easily with colleagues from different areas of expertise and backgrounds. You've mastered the basic theory of radar systems and want nothing more than to expand your knowledge in this field. You not only have an eye for the radar systems themselves, but also for the environment in which they have to operate, in the broadest sense of the word. You have a clear affinity with the MoD and you preferably have knowledge of and/or experience with sensor systems used in this context.
You're creative in coming up with new concepts and you know how to communicate and explain them clearly to colleagues and stakeholders. At the same time, you possess a healthy dose of critical ability to assess what it takes to turn an idea into reality.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

• A master's degree in electrical engineering, (applied) physics, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or similar studies.
• Preferably at least 3 years of work experience with a scientific or engineering background in one or more of these fields: sensor technology, (radar) signal processing, system performance analysis, integrated air and missile defence, ballistic missile defence, electronic warfare.
• Working knowledge of MATLAB and/or Python.
• Willingness to work at least 3 days at the office (The Hague) to interact with your team and Radar Technology colleagues.

The selection process

The selection process comprises two interview rounds. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
A certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.
As you will be working for clients in the domain of defence and security, a Certificate of No Objection issued by AIVD (The Dutch General Information and Security Service) is mandatory. This means you will have to undergo a security screening. Read more about security screening .
